A half-face respirator with organic-vapor (OV) cartridges — the pink/black 3M-style cartridges rated for organic solvents — is the standard for lacquer spraying. Dust masks and surgical masks do nothing against solvent vapor.
Fit matters as much as the cartridge: shave-line seal, both straps, and a quick palm-block test before spraying. Replace cartridges on schedule or when you can smell solvent through the mask — smell-through means the carbon is spent.
