
Tamiya Acrylic and Mr. Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color are the two Japanese "acrylics" that dominate scale-model and Gunpla benches, and they cause endless confusion because neither behaves like a normal water-based acrylic. Tamiya's X and XF paints are alcohol-based; Mr. Hobby Aqueous is water-based with a mild solvent. They are not "acrylics" like Vallejo
Despite the label, neither is a soft water-clean acrylic. Tamiya X and XF thin best with Tamiya's own X-20A, or, for the hardest and smoothest airbrushed finish, with a lacquer-type leveling thinner. Mr. Color Leveling Thinner is a bench staple exactly because it slows evaporation and helps the paint self-level, improving the airbrushed finish of both brands. Thinning: the core skill

Airbrushed Tamiya self-levels into a superb, smooth coat that is slightly glossy even in the XF flats, which makes it an excellent base for decals and panel lining. Aqueous lays down a slightly more matte-to-satin, very even coat. Both benefit from a clear topcoat to unify the sheen and protect the paint: seal with a matte like Mr. Super Clear Flat once everything is cured. Layering and panel lining
The other reason finish matters is what goes on top. Tamiya's smooth, slightly glossy airbrushed base is an ideal surface for an enamel panel-line wash: the wash flows into the recesses and wipes cleanly off the glossy plastic without staining, which is exactly why so many builders spray a Tamiya or gloss base before lining. Aqueous takes a wash well too, but its more matte surface grips a little more, so a gloss coat before lining is wise. Both also accept decals better over gloss, which prevents the silvering that a matte surface traps under the carrier film. Masking and cure time
Cure time is where the chemistry bites. Tamiya's alcohol base hardens relatively quickly and takes masking tape without much drama once cured, which suits the hard-edged two-tone schemes common on mecha. Aqueous stays softer for longer, so rushing tape onto a fresh coat can lift it — give it a full day, or seal it first.
