The trade-offs, honestly
The value is real, but it is not free. Foam nail buffers and wet-dry sandpaper are cheaper by the square inch; you are paying for graded, hobby-cut foam sticks and the convenience of a matched ladder. The sheets also wear — the adhesive-backed grit loads up with swarf and dulls, and the finest grits are the first to give out, so treat the #4000 and #6000 as consumables and rinse them to stretch their life.
They are also not a seam filler. Sanding removes material; it does not close a gap. Deep seams and sink marks still want capillary cement or putty first, then the ladder to blend. And there is the overshoot trap: climbing all the way to #6000 on a part destined for a matte coat is effort you will never see.
Getting the most out of them
- Wet-sand. A drop of water floats the swarf, stops the grit clogging, and produces a cleaner cut — and it keeps fine styrene dust out of the air, which matters at any enclosed bench.
- Work in one direction, check under raking light, then rotate ninety degrees and go again so you can see stray scratches.
- Prime to reveal. A thin coat of primer/surfacer exposes every scratch and missed nub you would otherwise only find after the color coat. Sand, prime, inspect, spot-sand — that loop is what separates a clean build from a blotchy one.
One safety note that has nothing to do with fumes: sanding plastic makes fine dust, and styrene dust is not something to breathe in a closed room. Wet-sanding, a damp cloth, or a quick pass with a vacuum keeps it down.
